VOLUNTEER OF THE QUARTER
What got you interested in volunteering your time for derby?
I was a skater for 4 ½ years, and after an injury (non-derby related initially), I wanted to find something that kept me in derby without having to worry about my knees. I found out reffing and I were a good fit.
Pre-derby skating/volunteering background?
Teacher, mom, DIYer
Pre-derby bout volunteer ritual?
Running all over the house looking for my stripes, my head scarf and my water bottle (all usually where they are supposed to be).
Greatest accomplishment so far?
Outside of derby, my son. If you haven’t met him, you are missing out on knowing an amazing human- that came out of me (shock!!!). In Derby, being around for 8+ years, earning the reputation for being fair and unbiased as a ref.
In derby- to become a certified ref. In life- it depends on the day.
Interests outside of volunteering for derby?
Vintage Trailers, Wonder Woman, Scooters and Pink Flamingos. Not in that order all the time.
Molder of young minds.
Has volunteering for derby influenced your life in any way off the track?
Honestly, I am a lot more confident around people I don’t know. At one time (don’t laugh), I was fairly shy around strangers, and was somewhat of a wall-flower. Derby has definitely given me a voice. It has helped me be comfortable in my own skin.
What would you tell someone about our sport that is interested in getting involved?
Everyone in derby is important. Everyone in derby has a place.
Most rewarding/difficult aspect of volunteering for derby?
Rewards are MOST DEFINITELY the friendships. I have made some of the most incredible friends- whom I most likely would have never met without derby. The most difficult aspect is how officials as a group are usually treated. Refs are often taken for granted, and NSOs are often ignored.
Most rewarding part of being a WTR volunteer?
The skaters. I have never worked with a team that makes me feel like I am an important part of the community.
